CSCA March 2011 ground casting
Is this the year? Uh-Huh!
We started the weekend off Friday with the typical casting practice and the Farmer clan arrived at the Shallotte sod farm in force. I stopped by for a few minutes as I was on another mission, but was there long enough to be informed by the old gooomers, my status as honorary member was not to be entertained, lacking in some moral fiber and way too young or some such crap. However I did kick their ole butts (lol) today. That, however is not the tale of the day. It belonged to a hard fought casting match on the field between Robert and Tommy, about a yard between them, Is this the year? I guess that is to be fought to conclusion tomorrow, and from what I saw, regularly.
The story of the day is more about personal bests and is how we will refer to this casting event: The Carolina ground-casting event of 2011. Epitomized by the efforts of Darvin Greer, who admitted to having practiced everyday since meeting at the airport in Wilmington a couple months ago, with Tommy, Tony and a few others. Darvin's form was on today. I was near him but behind him moving my flag toward the mid six hundreds when I saw him cross the 700 line and move another 10 paces or so. Now, having experienced that, I knew what he was feeling. Lots of hard work and effort, equal results. It isn’t bad to have the Carolina Surfcasting Association members help either. So Darvin congrats to you.
As far as the conditions go, it really was a baffling day. Sometimes you can’t get the field set up just right and even when the field was downwind with good gusts the lead didn’t fly. It just didn’t. Early on really promising conditions were there, but the weights would not fly. So not much to do about that. Then it went in our face and we broke to cook and eat with a few more casts of the day in to a bad cross wind. Tough conditions!
Some accolades have to be handed out to Brittany for running a smooth show, to Robert, Angel, Brian and Mark for pitching in with the foodstuffs. It was good seeing old faces and getting in the field for some competition and camaraderie. We also gave away a new Daiwa Mag T reel that I would have loved to be the owner of, not to be. I think Tommy has some video of that and hopefully Britt will add a picture of the leader board for the day shortly.
We had a good day and I want to recognize a cast made by Charlie Farmer of over 600 feet, a PB as well.
More tomorrow
